Welcome to Gee...You Will Project!!
How it all started…
The “Gee...You Will Have a Dress for that Formal” project, now the “Gee...You Will Project,” was created by Friends of Gale Ullmer (G.U.) Will. This initiative is dedicated to empowering women and to giving them the tools they need to live a happy, prosperous and successful life.
In her life, Gale embodied the characteristics of empowerment and drew on them to make herself a strong, successful and influential person. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a career woman, a friend and a survivor of breast cancer. Despite her triumph over breast cancer, she later succumbed to leukemia on October 27, 2000. While she was taken from this life too soon, she left behind a legacy... one in which she gave, not only of her possessions, but also of herself.
This project was created with Gale’s spirit of giving in mind. Her family and friends wanted to give purpose to the gowns she had purchased to wear to military balls and events she attended when she and her husband were living and working overseas.
In collaboration with the Women in Business Forum, a project of First State Community Action Agency’s Entrepreneur Resource Center, the “Gee...You Will Have A Dress for That Formal” project began in May 2003.
Formal Invitation…
The formalwear initiative provides dresses to women, most of whom may not otherwise be able to afford the attire for a formal occasion. In the beginning, the Department of Labor’s Delaware Commission for Women lent space for the gowns to be stored, thanks to the efforts of our partner Stephany Foster, who was tragically taken from this earth on April 14, 2006 in an auto accident.
Gowns are currently stored at Avenue United Methodist Church, Milford, where the formalwear lending library was adopted as a mission project in December 2005. Avenue United Methodist Women and Missions Chairperson Joanne Burbage have been a Godsend to the project, as has Elaine Willey who is assisting the project in working to secure non-profit status.
Fortunately, Thoro-Kleen Dry Cleaning and Laundry,
owned by Joseph Booth, Georgetown, has kindly agreed to assist with the dry cleaning of the gowns.
Gowns are offered free of charge, however, donations are graciously accepted to cover the cost of the cleaning and maintenance of the gowns. Since “Gee...You Will...” began, many have joined in this effort: thanks to donations, the inventory now offers over 250 gowns in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles.
In other activities…
In addition to the gown project, “Gee...You Will…” also offers a mentoring component. The After Proms Party in June 2006, was out first mentoring event and activities are now planned on a regular basis to bring women from all components of the program together to share with one another.
Between the dress program and the mentoring effort, this project has touched the lives of hundreds of women in the past few years and it just keeps getting better! We are always happy to share our inspirational stories and to provide services wherever possible. We are hoping to secure non-profit status in the near future to future our project’s scope.
Friends of G.U. Will hosts more than 50 women at the annual “Women Supporting Women Through Opportunity Conference” in in March each year. The three-day event provides opportunities for networking, mentoring, and education. The Conference is sponsored by our long-supportive partner the Delaware Commission for Women, along with other businesses and organizations who graciously lend their support to the cause. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Project.
Additionally, the Gee...You Will Project is co-sponsors the “Stephany A. Foster Memorial Scholarship” with First State Community Action Agency. The scholarship targets females studying education or the helping professions. Three scholarships were awarded in 2007.
